WHAT'S NEW? WORK! / Chantal Hamaide

At the “WHAT’S NEW?” spaces within the MAISON&OBJET fair, the latest trends come to life through the subtle, inspiring, and diverse selection of new products by our trend analysts. For the September 2019 edition, Share, the space by François Delclaux, explores the extremes of style. Elizabeth Leriche, at Care, displays a tactile textile selection. Living by François Bernard provides us with some ideas on how to reaffirm our uniqueness. And finally, for this Autumn season, Chantal Hamaide demonstrates, through WORK!, the nascent hybridization of work, home, and…objects. So we can make their concept our own, they share their enlightening thought processes below.

What story does Work tell?

Connectivity and autonomy are going to make our professional lives easier in a wider variety of spaces, both public and private. They may be spaces for meetings and discussions, completely independent, or shared. Objects for the world of work must fit into all the scenarios that are possible today. I have identified four main areas based on these evolutions in behavior and spaces. They speak to connectivity, mobility, comfort, and use. The idea was to find categories of objects useful for community, to create intimacy, and to foster comfort.

What type of environment does this take place in?

This selection includes both sophisticated sticky notes and notebooks and pens, and ranges from suitcases to wastebaskets, Nespresso machines, and rolling tables, and also offers lightweight furniture…Connected objects incorporating technology, and those for the intimate sphere related to writing, cross paths. To bring them all together, we have envisioned, along with Philippe Boisselier, a setting that is like a concept store, where you can discover the incredible variety of solutions on offer.

What trends do you see emerging or being confirmed?

Increasingly, we work from home, and the office looks like home. We’re seeing the emergence of a synergy of objects that go from one to the other, borrowing from the domestic sphere, for example. Nowadays, we need major connectivity and a softening of this environment; we also need personal objects and beautiful things.

What would you say are four iconic products from the WORK! spaces?

A lightweight, mobile table from Vitra. An iconic nomadic worker’s backpack by Nava. To seek comfort amidst our multitude of activities, the bento box in its softly colored bag by Takanaka. And the multi-room connected speakers from Urbanears.
