In recent years the Council has expended asignificant amount of effort developing our presence in China. This has occurred, not only because we have an important Memberbase in China, but also in recognition that China’s potent manufacturing sector and emergent internal markets will impact designers across the planet for years to come. We have been very fortunate to have privileged relationships with many key institutions, thanks to a longstanding connection dating back to the 2009 Icograda GA and Congress.

Min Wang has played a significant role in these relationships for more than a decade. Min played a key role in organising the Icograda Congress in Beijing in 2009. This was the first major international design event in China and had far-reaching consequences for Chinese design, including the establishment of Beijing Design Week (now thelargest in the world with 8 million annual participants), and many other design-community related developments. Min was in charge of the 2009 Congress effort, along with a team of tireless, devoted colleagues that accomplished a great deal in the context of complicated circumstances.

As both a Vice President of Icograda and Dean of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Min has been instrumental in building the links between the international community and the Chinese design community over the years. His continued dedication to building these connections, to bringing together organisations and people for the greater good of our global community, goes well beyond professional obligation. Min is one of those rare souls that genuinely works for the common good.

A graduate of Yale University, at the time of Paul Rand, a leading member of the Adobe design team, a prime organiser of the Chinese AGI contingent, a key contributor to the Beijing Olympic design and 2008 Beijing Olympic Committee, the World Economic Forum and countless Chinese government and design community committees and projects, Min is a global citizen who has contributed his time, intellect and passion to the greater good of designers around the world. For that reason, I am pleased to say that he is mightily deserving of this recognition.

Looking forward to many more years of fruitful collaboration and friendship, we award Min Wang with the 2019 ico-D President’s Award.
