Naqsh Collective: Bringing unity through Design

Jordan-based Naqsh Collective presents a new collection inspired by spirit of Arab unity through-the-ages at Design Days Dubai.

Inspired by both contemporary and traditional Arabic aesthetics, Naqsh Collective combines products of high quality and local craftsmanship inspired by Jordanian tradition. The ‘Wihdeh Collection’ uses embroidery patterns from the Levant region, reflecting the effect of various occupation eras in Palestine.  Every group of stitches is referred to as a ‘unit’ (or ‘Wihdeh’), stemming from the brand’s strong belief in the spirit of Arab unity.

Two prominent elements are presented in this collection; embroidery (‘Tatreez’) and the Naqsh Collective’s own personal stroke. The two are engraved into walnut wood and Corian® surfaces and enhanced with brass fillings. Through their design works, Naqsh Collective aims to shed light on the beauty of a unified Arab identity.

Wihdeh Collection, 2016

Nermeen and Nisreen Abu-Dail opened Naqsh Collective in Amman in 2010 to illustrate how Jordan’s rich history of craft could be melded into modern design. The pair turned to embroidery, a craft used in Arabic handiwork for centuries, and re-worked it for a 21st Century design aesthetic.
